All About the Tesla Model Three

Tesla now has more than 400,000 pre-orders for its smaller, more affordable sedan, and more specs about the long-awaited electrified car are beginning to come out.

UPDATE, July Ten, 2017: Elon Musk tweeted pictures of the very first production model–the outside, anyway.

UPDATE, July Three, 2017: Elon Musk said on Twitter today that the very first three would roll off the line on Friday, July 7.

Model three passed all regulatory requirements for production two weeks ahead of schedule. Expecting to finish SN1 on Friday

UPDATE, May 25, 2017: Specs for the Model three have leaked this week, and Tesla has confirmed that they are real. The key facts you need to know:

• It’ll go zero to sixty in Five.6 seconds

• It has 215+ miles of range

• Owners will have to pay for supercharging, whereas Model S owners get it for free

• Has fourteen cubic feet of trunk and rear cargo volume.

UPDATE, March 31, 2016: It’s alive! Read all about the Model three here.

UPDATE, February 11, 2016:

You’ll soon be able to put your money down for the Model Trio, according to the man himself:

Model three reservations ($1000 down) will be accepted in Tesla stores on March thirty one and online April 1

No signature series for Model Three. Same reservation amount for all.

UPDATE, February 2016: We’re getting close to the March two thousand sixteen mark when Elon Musk told the world that Tesla would expose the Model Three, it’s fresh, more affordable take on the electrified car. But Musk now says the event at the end of next month may not, in fact, be a total expose. Musk promised only “the very first pictures of the Model Three,” meaning some of the details about the much-anticipated EV could remain in a dark deeper into 2016.

Musk also confirmed, in a Feb. Nine interview with Bloomberg, that the Model three will meet its promised price tag of $35,000, and that’s before government incentives that could drive it significantly lower.

UPDATE, September Trio, 2015: Tesla chief Elon Musk took to Twitter last night, as he is wont to do, to drop some key facts about the upcoming Model Three, Tesla’s take on an affordable EV. Production will begin in two years, which jibes with what we already knew. Musk also taunted fans, however, by promising to expose the car in March of next year.

@elonmusk $35k price, unveil in March, preorders commence then.

June 15, 2014: A baby Tesla is coming to town. Tesla Motors confirmed late on Tuesday that its rumored third-generation car will be called, appropriately enough, the Model Trio. The vehicle will be about twenty percent smaller than the Model S, but will cost half as much. Tesla is aiming for the $35,000 range with the Model Three, which aims to take on the BMW three Series when it hits the road in 2017.

This news comes despite the fact that Tesla’s newest vehicle, the crossover Model X, has yet to even show up on the roads (the company is scheduled to produce the very first ones to buyers later this year). According to Auto Express, which broke the story, Tesla will expose the Model III in two thousand sixteen in advance of the two thousand seventeen production year. (Auto Express also has pics of a possible Model III, but Tesla says those are based on early mock-ups.)

What’s with the boring name? Legal problems. Tesla Motors head Elon Musk told Auto Express that since he already makes a Model S and Model X, it seemed only natural to build a Model E–but Ford says it wields that name and sued.

Update: Tesla has also announced that the three will come in both sedan and crossover variants.
