The incident happened just before one a.m. Sunday in the eight hundred block of 22nd Street.

Police identified the victim as Lalanna Sharpe. The infant suffered stab wounds and was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children`s Hospital this morning, 10TV reported.

Denise Alex-Bouzounis with the Columbus Division of Police emailed a statement to 10TV regarding the child’s death: “Any homicide is a tragedy but for a baby to have her life cruelly taken is devastating for her family, the community and our officers on the scene and investigating this case.”

A neighbor was in tears when she described how the slain 1-year-old chick was always smiling and would say «hi,» from her grandmother`s porch.

«It`s heartbreaking,» Cherise Reid said. «How could a mom do that with her own kid?»

She only spotted the baby interact with the grandmother and her uncle, and only spotted the child`s mother twice.
