The most American cars list has seen some switches

These are the most American cars of 2017

This month’s news of Ford Concentrate production shifting to China was met with only muted dismay, but in an age of truly global production lines how much of the Concentrate was “American” to begin with? The Concentrate didn’t even break into the top ten of Cars.com’s two thousand seventeen list of the most American cars made, well before its departure for the Middle Kingdom was announced.

In fact, the annual American-Made Index criteria received its first-ever revision this year, due to the increasingly global nature of car production: Cars.com had to switch the way it calculates the list in response to ever-dropping percentages of domestically-produced components.

“Over the AMI’s 11-year history, the number of models meeting our original criteria has fallen due to the globalization of automobile manufacturing — from more than sixty vehicles in the AMI’s inaugural year to eight last year,” the researchers said. “By the original requirements, only three two thousand seventeen models would have qualified this year.”

Ford will build the next-gen Concentrate sedan in China

Ford Motor Co. plans to import its next-generation Concentrate sedan from China, abandoning plans to build the petite car in Mexico.Production will begin in the 2nd half of 2019, Ford said .

The revised criteria is based on variables such as domestic-parts content, U.S. manufacturing jobs supported per vehicle and U.S. sourcing for engines and transmissions, with the Index now de-emphasizing overall sales — the economic influence of a particular model line is less of a factor now. The five main factors for the current index are: domestic parts content, assembly location, U.S. factory employment adjusted by sales to reflect how many employees each sale supports, engine origin and transmission origin. One fresh variable is the weight given to the domestic influence of a U.S. buyer purchasing one vehicle model over another, which favors local labor influence for any given vehicle.

These are the ten most American vehicles of 2017, according to Cars.com methodology:

1. Jeep Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited (Toledo, Ohio)

Two. Jeep Cherokee (Toledo, Ohio and Belvidere, Ill.)

Five. Acura RDX (East Liberty, Ohio)

6. Ford F-150 (Dearborn, Mich., and Claycomo, Mo.)

Report: Lotus production may head to China after Geely buys stake

Lotus may become the latest western marque to shift some production to China, Bloomberg reports, after China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group announced plans to purchase stakes in Malaysian .

The researchers behind the list note a number of fresh developments that influenced the revisions to the two thousand seventeen criteria.

“In a politically charged era of build-American sentiment, a sizable portion of shoppers still care where their car comes from. Cars.com surveyed 1,023 respondents in June two thousand seventeen to find about twenty five percent would only consider an American manufacturer. That’s almost dual the percentage that answered the same way in 2016. The largest block of this year’s respondents (again, about twenty five percent) thought that inbetween thirty one percent and forty percent of cars sold in the U.S. are ‘American made.’ That’s accurate if it’s stringently automakers fully headquartered in the U.S. — namely Ford, GM and Tesla, whose combined sales through May account for about a third of all U.S. auto sales, per Automotive News. But if you’re looking at all cars built here regardless of automaker headquarters, it’s about sixty percent. That’s according to a Cars.com analysis in January, which found that around three in five U.S. light-duty vehicle sales in two thousand sixteen were from cars assembled in America.”

Perhaps the fattest surprise on this year’s list is that only one GM model broke into the top Ten, while four Honda vehicles (Acura included) occupy prominent catches sight of. The Ford Taurus is still a uniquely American model, tho’ its No. Three ranking also reminds us of the fact it is not truly a hot export anywhere other than Canada.
