State Police trooper shoots, kills car thief suspect in Rockbridge County

State Police cruiser and white Chevrolet Malibu involved in shooting

Perhaps only investigators, and the State Trooper who police said shot a man who pulled a gun on him, know how close we were to another officer being killed in the line of duty.

State Police said a trooper shot and killed a man in Rockbridge County around Ten:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Investigators said the man was behind the wheel of a car reported stolen Monday night in Vinton.

“The preliminary investigation shows that when the trooper was attempting to get [the man] out of the car, [the man] reached around his seat under some clothing,” explained Virginia State Police Captain George Austin.

Capt. Austin said the man had a gun, and motioned toward the trooper when the trooper shot him.

Investigators said they were waiting to make sure the man’s family was notified, before releasing his name publicly.

The trooper who fatally shot the man is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for a case like this one, State Police explained.

Investigators said when the trooper very first spotted the car, it looked abandoned. But as the trooper walked up to the car, he noticed someone inwards.

Investigators said a fight ensued which ended with the shooting.

Vinton Police Chief Ben Cook declined comment on the stolen car, explaining he would choose that State Police release all information about the stolen vehicle.

The trooper found the car parked in the lot of Glasgow Life Saving and Very first Aid Team’s Station Two, which is next to the Natural Bridge Hotel, and very near the Natural Bridge landmark.

State Police tell us the trooper-involved shooting happened around ten a.m. in the Natural Bridge area of Rockbridge County.

Investigators say that’s when a trooper spotted a stolen Chevy Malibu parked at the Glasgow Live-Saving Team Station No. Two, across from the Natural Bridge Hotel (near Rt. Eleven and Rt. 130). The car was reported stolen in Vinton on Monday.

State police say the trooper then approached the car and eyed a man inwards. There was some type of fight before investigators say the man pulled out a gun, and that’s when the trooper shot and killed him.

We do not know his identity. Police say the man never fired any shots.

As is standard procedure, the trooper is on paid administrative leaving pending the outcome of an investigation.

What do you think of President Trump’s “war” with the media?

President Trump has made no secret his disdain for the mainstream media, calling news reports, polls and editorials he doesn’t like “fake,” “trash,” “biased,” and “totally, absolutely unfair,” among other things. He points to a CNN story that was retracted earlier this year and a Fox News story that the network apologized for as evidence of the media’s inherent bias against his presidency. Others, however, think that while some in the press have it out for him, the president overreacts to criticism, making him look unpresidential and thin-skinned. They also say his across-the-board indictment of the media will weaken the press’s credibility — and his own — to the point they’ll be incapable to ferret out wrongdoing by both Republicans and Democrats. What do you think?
