Mercedes-AMG GT four-door two thousand eighteen spied at Nurburgring

Mercedes-AMG has been caught lapping the four-door version of its GT sportscar around the renowned Nurburgring circuit in Germany, with the stylish sedan said to be packing a 600kW petrol-electric punch.

If the rumours ring true, the GT four-door – affectionately dubbed GT4 – will be powered by the same hybrid powertrain that debuted under the bonnet of the GT Concept during the Geneva motor showcase in March this year.

The demonstrate car teamed the Four.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the existing two-door GT range with an electrified motor that can send instantaneous power to the rear axle.

The brand may also suggest the GT4 with non-electrified powerplants. (Photo credit: AutoMedia)

The battery pack for the GT Concept’s electrical motor is able to charge itself via regenerative braking, while the engine can also assist in the process when charge levels go underneath a certain threshold.

Unlike the rear-wheel-drive GT Coupe and Roadster, the GT Concept sends power to all four wheels via Mercedes-AMG’s ‘4Matic’ system, with the GT4 likely to adopt this exact set-up.

Therefore, this proposed combination of traction and outright power means the four-seat GT4 could knock down the sprint from zero to 100km/h in less than three seconds.

Such spectacle would pit the GT4 against the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which also uses a Four.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, but falls brief of the AMG model with its 500kW/850Nm outputs.

Additionally, the GT4 should feature at least two driving modes including maximum power and all-electric – but its range has yet to be disclosed.

From the GT4’s debut onwards, high-performance hybrids from the German carmaker will reportedly be branded ‘EQ Power+’ – a moniker taken from Mercedes-AMG’s Formula One cars.

Alternatively, the brand may also suggest the GT4 with non-electrified powerplants taken from the aforementioned two-seat GT line-up that will receive a mid-life update later in 2017.

After its facelift, the GT’s Four.0-litre twin-turbo V8 unit will come in four states of tune – either 350kW/630Nm (GT), 384kW/670Nm (GT S), 410kW/680Nm (GT C) or 430kW/700Nm (GT R) – with the GT4 potentially inheriting any, if not all, of these.

Looking at the spy shots, it is clear that the production version of the GT4 will not stray far away from the GT Concept’s look, with the same angular headlights and large grille opening prevalent at the front end.

The GT4 is anticipated to make its way into Australian showrooms during 2018.

Similarly, the rear carries over the concept car’s slimline LED tail-lights, but with a less pronounced diffuser, as well as quad harass tips underneath.

However, the most interesting detail is that the GT4 might not be a four-door after all, with the figure gaps either side of the rear glass suggesting that there might be a hatch instead of a traditional boot.

When the steeply raked C-pillar and roofline-mounted third brake light are also factored in, assumptions that AMG’s newest model is, in fact, a five-door may ring true.

The GT4 is anticipated to make its way into Australian showrooms during 2018, with a public expose of the production car to take place as early as the Frankfurt motor display in September this year.
